Summary
Benjamin and Susan Shapell Foundation was established in 1997 in Beverly Hills, California by the Shapell couple and is called after their names.
The annual contribution of the foundation is nearly 200 thousand dollars for various philanthropic causes.
Background
The Shapell family is a wealthy family who live in Beverly Hills in Los Angeles. David (z"l) and Fela Shapell (z"l) are Holocaust survivors of German origin, who managed to escape in time and immigrate to the United States. Following the loss of their parents who were killed in the Holocaust they decided to establish a family foundation after their names. This foundation aims to support the existence and continuity of the Jewish people, as well as Holocaust memorialization and education on this issue.
In 1955, Benjamin's uncle, Nathan Shapell, founded with his two brothers, Max and David, the real estate development company "Shapell Industries". Nathan was the CEO and president of the company. At first the company started in development of farms in Los Angeles and today it controls assets in the downtown. In 2013, the company's department of residential buildings development was sold to a competitor for $ 1.6 billion. Nathan established a philanthropic foundation that is currently managed by his daughter Vera.
Benjamin followed the philanthropic legacy of his parents and uncle and established another foundation with his wife Susan. He also established the Benjamin Shapell Family Manuscript Foundation for preservation of historical manuscripts of the land of Israel and the United States. The foundation works in collaboration with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the National Library of Israel, as well as other research institutions.
